ASK WITH FR. TIM - EP 2
IS PLAYING VIDEO GAMES WITH FALSE IDOLS A SIN?
There's probably a variety of reasons for that. First is time, get too engaged in, running this parish and doing my various tasks. Number two is a complete total lack of hand-eye coordination. Those who have seen me drive probably realized that to be true. And very few want to be passengers in my car when I'm doing so.
But it's also the case that in my family, we had when I was a child, Atari, there was the Commodore 64, there was Atari, and then that gaming system got stolen at a party my sister should not have been having. And that was the end of my video gaming career.
To me it sounds very much like the questions people were asking back when the Harry Potter books were first published.
When those movies first came out was somehow with subscribing to evil, or to the spirit world to be reading those books or watching those movies. If I believe that there's such a place as Gryffindor or Hogwarts, then I'm delusional. But if I just enjoy it for an entertainment purpose, that's probably okay.
I think there's a very clear line between things that I engage in for entertainment and things I engage in, because I believe in it.
The concern I have about video games these days is how often they are violent, and really desensitize us to acts of violence all around us. I don't think there's any harm in harmless entertainment.
But if we take delight in harmful entertainment that actually glorifies hurting other people, I think that's probably where the real issue lies.
I would hope that we would find balance in all things. Do we make time for our school, for our work, for our sports? And enough time for recreation? But balance in all things.
